Madera 6th grader wins regional essay contest

An 11-year-old Madera student will be honored next month for winning a regional essay contest sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Joshua Diaz, a sixth grade student at St. Joachim School, said he wrote his essay using inspiration from letters written by three of his cousins who served in Iraq in the U.S. Army.

“I wrote about the amazing country that I live in and the veterans that have fought our wars to keep us free,” he said. “I also wrote about the generosity that the country has given.”

Diaz wrote not only about the sacrifices American soldiers have made to fight for freedom, but also of the sacrifices that American citizens make to help each other and people in foreign countries...
