Madera teacher remembered as student focused

Jean Kato, a highly respected Madera educator who taught 35 years at Madera High School, has died at the age of 60. In addition to her long professional career, she was an active member of the community.

According to family sources, Kato died Saturday from complications while undergoing a routine surgery at Madera Community Hospital.

Since her retirement from Madera Unified in 2009, Kato has worked as a counselor at ACEL Charter High School in Fresno.

David Childers, the school’s director said, “I am both shocked and saddened at the loss of Jean Kato. All of us at ACEL will miss her dearly, and this will be a tremendous blow to the family atmosphere at the school that she was so integral in helping to create.” ...
