Residents honored fallen service members and the family of one of Madera’s own was recognized by a state lawmaker during an annual Memorial Day service on Monday.

The parents, siblings, nieces and nephews of the late Army Sgt. Raul Moncada gathered with State Sen. Anthony Cannella (R-Ceres) before more than 100 people on the lawn of the Madera County Museum at Courthouse Park.

Moncada, a Madera High School alumnus, was killed four years ago when a roadside bomb exploded near his vehicle while he was serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom in Baghdad.

His parents Raul Moncada Sr. and Obdulia Moncada accepted the resolution presented by Cannella on behalf of the state Legislature. The couple proudly held up the mementos presented to them, surrounded by their family...
