Locals to host fundraiser for Madera High grad’s wheelchair quest

Local special needs children and their families will be the guests of honor at a fundraising dinner this month to help support a Madera High graduate’s attempt to set a world record.

David Mensch, who has cerebral palsy and relies on a wheelchair, will attempt to ride his motorized chair 120 miles from Bakersfield to Madera on March 30. If he succeeds, he will set the Guinness World Record for longest trip in a motorized wheelchair.

Mench’s 16-year-old son, Zach, will ride alongside him on his bicycle.

The feat, named “David and Zach’s Quest,” is aimed to raise money for the Kern Assistive Technology Center, a non-profit group in Bakersfield that helps those with special needs communicate...
