Local hosts her last annual Christmas giveaway

Longtime Christmas giveaway organizer Shirley McClellan was pleased to see the last annual Christmas giveaway of food, toys and clothing to the needy “go out with a bang.”

McClellan, who led the nonprofit Diversity for the Community for 20 years, said she is finally retiring the Santa Claus suit because getting people and businesses to donate to the needy is too exhausting.

“This is it. It’s been 20 years and there will be no more. It’s too expensive and it’s hard to get people to donate and I am sick of it. But this year we went out with a bang,” said McClellan. “I’m just so glad that everybody came through for me,” she said.

This year, however, she was delighted to see a surge in donors after a story about her longtime efforts to give to Madera’s most needy during the holidays published in The Madera Tribune...
