Local fire officials warn where and how to light fireworks

Madera fire officials hope everyone celebrates the Fourth of July safely and legally by using approved fireworks and exercising common sense.

“Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions on fireworks purchased at fireworks stands — those are deemed ‘safe and sane’ fireworks,” said Madera County Fire Marshall Debra Keenan. “These are technically considered explosives, so use general safety precautions. Use common sense, supervise your children and have a safe day.”

Fireworks stands, including those at various locations in the city and county of Madera, are the only places in the state where residents can legally purchase fireworks, Keenan said.

Those who light fireworks should do so on pavement, not near dry grass, officials recommend...
