Local Elks attend national convention

Local Elks have returned from the Grand National Convention of Elks, which was held at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno this week. Eddie Block, exalted ruler of the Madera Elks Lodge, was accompanied by his wife, Angela, and Elks' treasurer Larry Faust and his wife Barbara.

"I now, more than ever, am prepared to help our community and our citizens," said Block.

More than 3,000 lodge members, representing the nation's 50 states and its territories, attended the annual gathering. Sunday's opening ceremonies included each state being recognized. A representative placed his region's flag on the dais. In addition to all the states, Puerto Rico, Guam, Panama, and the Philippines were also represented.

Block and Faust attended classes and meetings, such as two intensive grant-writing seminars to aid the local lodge in receiving grants to help the community. Only 50 Elks, including Block, also attended an invitation-only cocktail party hosted by the newest national Elks grand exalted ruler, Thomas Brazier...
