Work of local portraitists showing

MADERA RANCHOS — Until the end of May, The Coffee Spot will be displaying a collection of work produced by award-winning portraitist Lorraine Walter, 88, and her late husband Arnold H. Walter.

Despite her work’s strong depictions of light, shadow and detail, Walter doesn’t rely heavily on photographs for her imagery, and initially she wouldn’t use them for reference either.

“I didn’t in the beginning; it was not the way I was trained,” she said. Even now, “I don’t like to be focused on someone else’s work. It is too close, too personal.”

Although she now uses photos to a degree, the presentation is uniquely her own...
