Leap of faith taken as church hosts skydive

It all started as a joke. Many Madera Avenue Bible Church members gathered this summer for a fun evening at a Grizzlies ball game. Pastor Tim Bergdahl’s wife, Janine, jokingly said to the group “Our next outing will be an all-church skydive!”

But soon afterwards the idea intrigued her. Why not? It would be lots of fun. But would anyone go?

As she talked more to others about the idea, she got tons of responses from “Cool!” to “Are you kidding?” to “I’d NEVER do that!” to “How much does it cost?” People just don’t normally put the two words “church” and “skydive” in the same sentence. After four people showed genuine interest, she started making the arrangements.

Right after church service on Sunday, several attendees left straight to the Madera Parachute Center, near the Madera Airport. The announcement was for others to grab a bite to eat, and then join the jumpers after they had received some training and signed their lives away...
