Law officers salute fallen comrades

A solemn and dignified annual memorial ceremony was held in Courthouse Park Wednesday to remember and honor local law enforcement officers who were killed in the line of duty in Madera.

The Madera Peace Officers Memorial monument stands adjacent to a shady pathway near the front of the historic courthouse building. On the granite monument are engraved the names of eight fallen officers, with the first dating back to 1919.

Called “End of Watch” by law enforcement, the ceremony commemorates four officers who died as a result of gunfire and four who were killed in vehicle collisions.

Uniformed officers stood at attention as the names of the fallen were read, and “Taps” was played. The sound of bagpipes performing “Amazing Grace” brought tears to many participants’ eyes. A rifle salute was also performed...
