Land sold for delinquent taxes

A debt delayed cannot be avoided forever. The county has sold the property of taxpayers long in arrears.

“On Feb. 5, we sold nine parcels that had unpaid property taxes for five or more years,” Madera County Tax Collector- Treasurer Tracy Kennedy Desmond said, “and we are going to have another public auction on April 29 and offer 17 more parcels.”

Her staff committed hundreds of hours to meet all of the legal requirements for conducting this tax sale, she said. “Gina Brumley and Dan Garcia both put in many hours of research and preparation in order for our sale to happen. Without them, we would not have been able to have the tax sale as planned.”

The sale was a “statutory duty,” Kennedy Desmond said. “Sometimes, if we have very good luck contacting the owners of record and they bring their taxes current, we may not have to have a tax sale, but if they can’t pay or do not want to pay, we have to conduct a public auction.” ...
