Judge tells DA to pay

A Superior Court judge on Thursday issued a monetary sanction against the office of Madera County District Attorney Michael Keitz for prosecutorial misconduct in the high-profile murder case of Krista Pike.

Stanislaus County Judge Maria Silviera ordered the DA’s office to repay the money spent by defense attorney John Garvin in his attempt to counter the misconduct of deputy district attorney Edmund Gil.

In an earlier court appearance in Modesto, Garvin had estimated it would take $50,000 to cover those expenses.

Silviera’s sanction resulted in head-scratching in the county administration offices. No one was sure where the money would come from. County Counsel Doug Nelson was reported as saying that no fund for paying sanctions such as this exists...
