A house divided: Not so, says other Chukchansi faction

A referendum asserting that the legitimate Picayune Tribe of the Chukchansi Indians Tribal Council consists of a group led by Reggie Lewis and Chance Alberta is invalid, according to Nancy Ayala, chairwoman of another faction that says it is the rightful governing body of the tribe.

Ayala released a statement in response to a Lewis faction press release, which asserted that 337 Chukchansi tribal members signed a referendum that affirmed Lewis, Alberta, and members-at-large Carl “Buzz” Bushman and Irene Waltz make up the tribe’s council. It also suspended Karen Wynn, Tracey Brechbuehl, and Nancy Ayala as active members of the tribal council.

“This statement from the Lewis faction is pure fiction,” Ayala said in her response Tuesday. “Even if they had a quorum to conduct business on behalf of the tribe, which they don’t, their claimed referendum was not conducted pursuant to the tribe’s constitution.”

According to Article XI of the Picayune tribe’s constitution, a referendum is only valid if it is presented to the tribal council and signed by 30 percent of the tribe’s qualified voters, Ayala said...
