Horse riders compete at gymkhana contest

CHOWCHILLA — Forty competitors and their horses competed for prizes and awards late in November at the first show of the “Under the Barn” gymkhana buckle series hosted by the Chowchilla Western Stampede and the Chowchilla Junior Fair at the Chowchilla Fairgrounds.

Gymkhana is a horse-riding competition involving timed games and patterned speed races.

Stampede Chairman Shane Barnes said he was encouraged by the turnout and community support. “There is nothing like seeing these kids and their parents together at this event,” he said.

Fair staff, Stampede committee members and Chowchilla residents volunteered to produce the gymkhana, which featured contestants in five age groups and from across three counties on Nov. 23...
