Alex Garcia, president of the Association of Mexican American Educators, gave three awards in the poster contest celebrating local Hispanic heritage at the Madera Unified School District board meeting Tuesday night.

The contest was open to all middle school and high school students. The celebration will begin Saturday and run through Oct. 15.

First place went to Felicia Ortega, above with MUSD Trustee Maria Velarde-Garcia, and it carried with it a $100 prize. Alyssa Roberts’ entry earned second place and $75. Gabriela Tapia’s third place entry got her a $50 prize.

More than 100 students entered the contest, and over 30 entries were displayed on the boardroom wall.
