Residents living in the Oakhurst Mobile Home Estates were advised Thursday afternoon not to drink their tap water or use it for cooking until further notice.

The drinking water was deemed contaminated after a recent cross connection with a water line from a septic system, Madera County Health Department officials said.

Bottled water should be use for all drinking, including baby formula and juice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, making ice and in food preparation until tests show that the water is safe to consume — presumably within the next couple of days — officials said.

Residents were advised not to try to treat the water themselves. Boiling, freezing, filtering or trying to add chemicals to the water will not make it safe, officials said.
