For many Madera Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Achievement Award winners, Madera is and has always been the place they call home.

But for Dr. James E. Walters, the path to Madera started across the country and took many memorable twists along the way.

Born to James Alexander and Geraldine Walters in 1937, Walters spent his childhood in the well-known borough of Harlem.

“I grew up with poverty around me,” Walters said. “I had a lot of friends going to jail. These were kids younger than 14. They had family situations, drugs, alcohol, just being hoodlums.” ...
