Madera police say a group of people soliciting donations for sick and dying children at the intersection of Country Club Drive and East Cleveland Avenue are running a scam.

Officers attempted to speak to five people collecting donations Sunday afternoon, but the alleged scammers grabbed their jars of cash and signs and fled the area.

“They didn’t want to talk to us for some reason. We detained, identified and questioned one woman. The rest took the cash, scattered and ran,” said Madera police Sgt. Gino Chiaramonte. “She claimed a connection to the fundraising cause, but we don’t believe that’s the case.”
