The political establishment of Madera is without one of its cornerstones, after the death of longtime Democratic activist Betty Pia.

The 49-year Maderan died Monday of complications of pneumonia. She was 95.

Born Ollie Bethina Kaiser on May 29, 1917, in Rome, Ga., she began assisting her midwife mother, Nancy, at the tender age of 7. She learned the intricacies of childbirth, such as sterilizing instruments in boiling water, and often stood on a small stool to catch babies as her mother soothed women during the long hours involved in home births.
