Giving Tree awaits gifts for children in need

About two dozen gifts sit under the Giving Tree at The Vineyard Restaurant in Madera, destined to be unwrapped by children of families who need extra help during the holidays.

Still, more than two dozen name tags with gift ideas remain on the 10-foot-tall Christmas tree, waiting for generous donors to match a present to each tag.

For more than 30 years, Malcolm Gatz of Madera has organized the Giving Tree toy drive, in which donors select a gift tag from the Christmas tree in The Vineyard’s foyer, then purchase and bring back the wrapped present suggested on the tag.

“This year there were 180 gift tags,” Gatz said. “The families sign up for the Giving Tree program at the Episcopal Church. Some are from the welfare program, some are in really bad circumstances, for example impoverished cancer survivors, and others are virtually homeless.” ...
