Gang member receives 35 years to life sentence

A Madera man and admitted gang member was sentenced to 35 years to life Friday after he was convicted last month of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon.

Jose Luis Matador, 23, was convicted in May for his actions on July 6, 2011.

On that day, Matador — a member of the notoriously-violent Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) street gang — walked a friend known only as “Manuel” home from the apartment of a mutual acquaintance.

Lead prosecutor Linda Dunn argued during trial that it was because of Manuel’s cooperation with police in a prior case that, along the way, Matador placed a .22-caliber handgun to Manuel’s head and fired...
