A 21-year-old self-proclaimed gang member is being held in Madera County Jail on murder charges in the death of 19-year-old Robert Moreno III of Madera, who was killed in a drive-by shooting in March, officials announced Monday.

Sheriff John Anderson said homicide detectives connected Sergio Novela, of Madera, to the March 21 crime and charged him with murder, shooting from a moving vehicle, and promoting criminal gang activity.

That night around 9:30 p.m., Moreno was walking to his neighborhood market to buy a gallon of milk. As he came to Cronin Street and Avenue 13 1/2, a car pulled up alongside him and the occupants opened fire, Sheriff’s officials said.

Even with his arrest, says Sheriff Anderson, the case remains open and the investigation is ongoing, because, “We know Novela did not act alone. We are asking anyone who may have seen anything, or heard something about this homicide, to please come forward and help us find those responsible for the shooting death of Robert Moreno III.”...
