Within days after news broke that 15-year-old Carlos Ponce had been shot to death in the streets of Madera, his friends took it upon themselves to organize multiple car washes and raise money for a family whose Christmas was marked by broken hearts and funeral plans.
On Friday, dozens of Ponce’s friends from Madera South High School washed cars along Gateway Drive near 6th Street while they talked about the teenage boy who was always quick with a smile.
“He was just a really good kid and a really good friend,” Ruby Morales said. “He was always looking after everybody and always had a smile on his face. That’s what we’ll miss most, his smile.”
A second donation-based car wash could be found in front of La Esperanza Market and will continue today through Sunday from around 9 a.m. until evening...
