Seniors targeted more than ever

The Madera County Sheriff’s Office has received more than double the amount of fraud complaints between January and April this year compared to the same time period last year, officials have reported.

“We are looking at almost a 250 percent spike in fraud complaints,” said Sheriff John Anderson, “with 112 complaints so far this year, compared to 45 filed last year.”

The majority of reported fraud cases involve financial theft and identity theft, all of them via the internet, mail and the telephone, said Sheriff’s spokeswoman Erica Stuart.
