About 175 patrons of the Fossil Discovery Center gathered at the paleontology museum and laboratory Saturday evening for a fundraising barbecue, silent auction and tours of the facilities.

Discovery Center president Lori Pond said the facility hosted about 11,000 visitors over the past school year, including some 5,000 students.

The center is operated by the San Joaquin Valley Paleontology Foundation, which was formed in 1996 after a major fossil discovery turned up when earth-moving machines were at work in the Madera County Landfill.
