Four hundred Madera residents in need were given boxes of food Saturday to help them during the holidays. The annual Christmas Holiday Box Giveaway by the Madera County Food Bank included donations from local churches and Pacific Gas & Electric Company.
To receive a box, recipients were required to have a voucher that was given out more than a month ago on a first-come first-served basis. Boxes were filled with rice, beans, fruit, pasta, tomato sauce, chicken, salsa and bread among other items.
Madera County Food Bank Executive Director Ryan McWherter said he was pleased with the donations and with the help from the community.
“We’re feeding people. I just want to thank the people who donated,” he said. McWherter said nearly 30 regular volunteers helped prepare the boxes and gave them away at the food bank...
