Portion of grocery chain donation goes to Madera County Food Bank

A donation of more than 1,000 cases of food — including grains, oats, pastas and vegetables — is set to feed thousands of needy people in Madera well into the holiday season.

The gift, presented to the Madera County Food Bank, is only part of a split bounty. Food 4 Less donated $40,000 worth of food to five food banks in the Central Valley.

“We’re just completely thrilled and overjoyed. The summertime is when it’s hardest to get donations and this comes at a perfect time as we’re gearing up for the holidays,” said Ryan McWherter, director of the Madera County Food Bank.

The Central Valley Food 4 Less supermarket group, which owns stores throughout the Central Valley including Madera, raised money for this donation through a charity golf tournament in May. Food 4 Less worked with partners and vendors to ensure tournament proceeds could acquire as many quality food items as possible to reach the most families in need, said Andy Souza, the CEO for Community Food Bank in Fresno...
