A proposed large-scale housing project near Highway 41 and Avenue 9 — expected to construct nearly 3,000 homes and over 3 million square feet of commercial, medical, and government space — was sent back for 60 more days of discussion by the Madera County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday.

Called the Gunner Ranch West project, the proposed development of around 1,000 acres, would sit on the west side of State Route 41 south of Avenue 10. It would include parks, a wastewater treatment plant, retail shops, expansion of Children’s Hospital Central California, and an elementary school.

The project is one of several proposed developments in the surrounding area including Tesoro Viejo near Avenue 12 and SR 41, North Shore at Millerton, and Gateway Village, which borders Gunner Ranch West to the north.

Combined, the developments will add up to at least 15,000 additional houses in southeast Madera County. They are also expected to create at least 10,000 jobs in several different fields including medical, teaching, and government, officials said...
