When pediatrician Aftab Naz opened his first clinic in Madera in 1982, it took mere months before he saw a patient he would remember the rest of his life.
“A 1-year-old girl came in with jaundice,” Naz said in his office at Madera Family Medical Group, the clinic where he is founder and president. “A few days later her tummy started swelling as her liver failed and fluid collected.”
Naz, worried about little Maria and unable to cure her, transferred her to Children’s Hospital — then on Gettysburg Avenue in Fresno — where other doctors were as perplexed as he was about her case.
