FRESNO (AP) — A wrongful death lawsuit has been filed by the parents of a 29-year-old suspect shot to death by Fresno officers on an elementary school campus after he ran and refused to stop.

The Fresno Bee said the suit filed Thursday by Jaime and Mirella Reyes claims police used unjustified deadly force against their son, Jaime Reyes Jr. The city and the officers involved in the shooting are named in the claim. Jaime Reyes Jr. died at a hospital after he was shot at Aynesworth Elementary School last June.

Police say he was a wanted probationer and a suspected gang member. When officers confronted him, police say he reached for the waistband of his pants and ran across the campus with an unloaded handgun.

An after-school program was placed on lockdown during the chase.
