Family Fridays offer parents a glimpse of the classroom

Preschoolers in Rosalia Velasco’s morning class sat alongside their parents excitedly as they watched how their teacher showed the adults writing and coloring.

The lessons weren’t to relearn the material itself, but rather to show them ways that help make concepts easier for their children to understand.

During the last Friday of each month, in what’s dubbed Family Fridays, parents go to their children’s classrooms during the last hour of the session. Teachers show the parents how to teach their children vocabulary and math in a fun and engaging way.

The program, funded by a grant for Madera Unified School District and First 5 Madera County, is implemented in the district’s 12 preschools. Parents also receive books to build a home library and supplemental learning materials...
