Runaway trailer careens into SUV; 2 children taken to hospital

A young Madera family escaped serious injury about 4:45 p.m. Tuesday after their SUV was struck and rolled over by a large trailer that had broken loose from a PG&E truck, according to The California Highway Patrol.

The trailer was hauling an auger and other heavy tools.

The family struggled to get out of the vehicle as a roadside grass fire sparked by the crash burned towards them. Other motorists stopped, broke out the windows of the vehicle and helped grab and remove the children as the fire approached.

Passenger Christopher Lucero said he and his sister were heading home to the Ranchos from visiting family in Visalia when he looked up and saw the trailer coming directly at them...
