Event helps out women's shelter

Fans of the Oakland Raiders turned out in force Tuesday afternoon at the Verizon Wireless Communications Store for a collection drive that benefitted Madera’s Martha Diaz Battered Women’s Shelter.

The National Football League and Verizon teamed up to help out the shelter, a place that provides up to 30 days of living quarters along with food and clothing to women and children who are in immediate danger of domestic violence.

The event’s main attraction was three-year Oakland wide receiver Jacoby Ford, along with an appearance by members of the Raiderettes, cheerleaders from the franchise.

By bringing items on the shelter’s wish list, fans in return received a VIP wrist band that allowed them to meet Ford and receive an autograph...
