10 percent response rate to evac warning

A fire threatened hundreds of homes in Oakhurst last week. Yet out of nearly 4,000 notifications issued by the Madera County Sheriff’s Department, less than 10 percent were confirmed as received.

In light of the stakes in such situations, Sheriff John Anderson urged county residents and property owners Friday to register for free emergency alerts via MC-Alert.

“We were lucky, this time,” noted Anderson in reference to the 20-acre blaze that threatened hundreds of homes and property in the area of John West Road and Road 426.

As fire crews battled the blaze on August 11, the Madera County Sheriff’s Office issued 3,822 emergency alerts, notifying homeowners, renters and property owners about a possible evacuation...
