Elks Lodge honors Desmond students

Students of the month given movie tickets, dinner

On Thursday night, the Madera Elks Lodge #1918 recognized two eighth grade students from Desmond School as their Students of the Month for December. Dylan Miracle and Vanessa Iboa were chosen by the Lodge’s Student of the Month Committee after reviewing many applications.

Dylan Miracle is an eighth grade student who dreams about wrestling for Penn State or Stanford universities, where he would like to major in business. At Desmond, Dylan is the Associated Student Body (ASB) president and part of the Science Club. Each week Dylan spends his free time at school helping special education students. After school, he enjoys watching the Penn State wrestling team and dreams of becoming a state champion for his division in wrestling.

Vanessa Iboa is working to get herself into Brown University, where she plans to major in criminal defense. Iboa is ASB vice president and a member of the leadership and peer mediation programs. Peer mediation is a program where students can talk to their peers about problems they have that they feel uncomfortable talking to adults about.

Exalted Ruler Eddie Block presented both students with their award after the Elks’ Family Night Dinner. Each student reflected publicly on their goals in life and motivations for them. The principal of Desmond Middle School, Marvin Baker, spoke highly of both students...
