Elks honor model 8th grader

The Madera Elks honored a Thomas Jefferson Middle School eighth-grader with their first Student of the Month award of the school year.

Itzanami Alvarez accepted the award at the Elks Lodge on Thursday night during the club’s regular meeting. She and her guests — family, her teacher and school counselor — were served dinner prepared by lodge members.

According to counselor Trino Cadaoas, Itzanami works very hard in class. “She has become a role model to her fellow students,” said Cadaoas.

Itzanami plays on the tennis team and wants to play on the USA team in the Olympics. She is also president of the school’s Peer Helpers club...
