The Madera Elks Lodge presented its Student of the Month Award to Wilmer Lazo, a Martin Luther King (MLK) Middle School student, at the club’s Family Dinner Night on Friday. Lazo was accompanied by his mother Denia Zapata, aunt Nancy Zapata and other family members.

Lazo came from Mexico at age 5 and speaks and writes English at a very high level. He maintains a near 4.0 grade point average and would like to attend Yale or the University of Pennsylvania after graduating from high school. He also maintains perfect attendance at his school’s International Club.

Returning home after school, Lazo helps care for his little brother, Noel, who is diabetic. Lazo goes out of his way to help with community service projects and looks forward to opportunities to make his community a better place to live, according to his school counselor Sara Bonilla, who recommended him for the award.

Elks Leading Knight Eddie Block and project coordinator John Bliss presented the honor.
