Elks give free dictionaries to third-grade students

In what has become an annual event, for the fourth consecutive year the Madera Elks Lodge has raised enough funds to help in the education of third grade students throughout the Madera Unified School District, and other schools.

Monday morning, members of the lodge began distribution of dictionaries to Alpha, Dixieland, Madison and Parkwood Elementary Schools. Project co-chairs, Timi Milor and Debbie Samora and Alpha vice principal Michelle Watson went to each third-grade class and explained the importance of having your own dictionary.

Watson was very happy with the enthusiasm of the children when they received their dictionaries from the Elks.

“So many of the kids don’t have any reference material at home,” she said, “and it is like the cover of the dictionary says, ‘knowledge is power.’ They need these to equalize the playing field.” ...
