James Madison Elementary School welcomed the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1981 for an early Veterans Day observance Friday morning.

Madison Principal Arora Chavez introduced the veterans and a group of students led the Pledge of Allegiance. Then students watched the VFW Post perform a presentation of flags and gun salute, and Reggie King play “Taps” on a bugle.

At the end, said 4th grade teacher Sarah Colomer, “each student from kindergarten to sixth grade patiently waited in line to personally shake the hand of each veteran of Post 1981. Many students added kind words such as ‘Thank you for protecting our country.’”

The traditional date of Veterans Day is Nov. 11, but many observances will take place Monday, which is a legal holiday.
