Participants in the Madera County Sheriff’s Elder Orphan program will be contacted by phone starting today, according to Erica Stuart, sheriff’s office spokeswoman.

The voluntary program was established by Sheriff John Anderson to provide senior citizens with regular checks on their welfare.

Stuart said the program offers two calling times daily. Morning calls start at 9 a.m. and afternoon calls start at 4 p.m. Clients can choose either morning or afternoon, or can receive calls both in the mornings and afternoons.

When the sheriff’s office call a client’s home, he or she will receive a prerecorded message instructing them to either touch 1, indicating message received and they are fine; or touch 2 to request emergency assistance...
