A Coarsegold man was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving and resisting arrest earlier this week after authorities said he crashed his car into a fence and attempted to fight sheriffs as he was taken into custody.

Elijah Johnson, 22, was arrested by two deputies of the Madera County Sheriff’s Department after Lt. Tyson Pogue saw a “plume of dust” when a car crashed into a fence in front of the Willow Glen Smoke Shop near Chukchansi Gold Resort & Casino.

Pogue, off-duty and not in uniform at the time, pulled over to make sure that the driver of the car was unharmed shortly after 10 p.m. Sunday.

Spokesperson Erica Stuart said that Pogue smelled alcohol on Johnson, and Johnson “showed clear signs of being under the influence of alcohol.” ...
