Driver killed after a jail flub

Who or what is to blame? A Fresno motorist lies dead, allegedly at the hands of a convicted felon and wanted criminal, one Walter Levon McDaniel.

There seems to be little question that McDaniel — on the run from police in a stolen car with a woman and 13-year-old boy as passengers — slammed into the victim’s vehicle on Wednesday.

But McDaniel, authorities say, should have been behind bars, not behind the wheel.

Described as a “career criminal” with a long string of car thefts, drug abuse, and apparent child concealment on his record, McDaniel seems to have been set free from the Fresno County Jail because of a bureaucratic flub...
