Culture, volunteer honored at fiesta

Hundreds celebrated the culture of Mexico and honored a community volunteer with music, food, crafts and family entertainment at the 11th annual Fiesta in the Park in Courthouse Park on Sunday afternoon.

Ramiro Gutierrez accepted the Community Recognition Award from the group Latinas Unidas, which co-sponsored the gathering with the city of Madera, and certificates of recognition from Assemblyman Frank Bigelow, and Senators Anthony Cannella and Tom Berryhill.

The fiesta was co-chaired by Mary Ellen Koop, Susan Arteaga, and Matilda Torres, who were busy throughout the park. Booths provided information, games and entertainment. The Madera Parks and Community Services Department staffed a family fun area with games and a booth on local recreational opportunities.
