After being on the verge of reaching the Div. I Valley Championship game for the past two years, the Madera boys soccer team entered this season with mighty expectations.

With a key core of players who have been on the varsity level for the past three seasons, Madera head coach Chris Baca felt very optimistic about the upcoming season and with good reason, too.

The two-time defending County/Metro Athletic Conference champion Coyotes return a majority of the players who lost a hard-fought match in last season’s playoff semifinals against Central-Fresno and vowed this year to return to that game with plans to advance to the Div. I section championship.

While preparing at a morning practice for the season opener against Clovis, Baca and the Coyote players received terrible news...
