Court dates set in assault case

Two gang members accused of viciously beating a 31-year-old Madera man nearly to death were arraigned in Madera Superior Court on Friday morning and await their next court dates.

Oscar Tista, 19, and Cristobal Rubio, 18, face up to 19 years in prison for crimes related to their alleged assault — including enhancements for gang participation and causing great bodily injury — of Jose Sanchez on June 16 of this year.

Both men plead not guilty at Friday’s arraignment hearing.

On the day of the assault, Tista, Rubio, and two suspects yet to be found by police allegedly approached Sanchez — sitting on the porch of a friend’s home between State Route 145 and Old Raymond Road — before they beat and robbed him...
