County reports 1st flu-related deaths

The Madera County Public Health Department reported its first two influenza-related deaths of the winter season this week.

On Tuesday, county public health director Van Do-Reynoso announced that a 63-year-old female patient at Madera Community Hospital died from complications related to a strain of H1N1 — also known as swine flu — that first circulated the Valley in 2009.

On Wednesday afternoon, a second female patient, 61, also passed away from flu complications, Do-Reynoso said.

Do-Reynoso noted that both women had preexisting medical conditions that exacerbated their illnesses and it was unknown whether either had ever received a flu vaccination...
