$3M less than last year collected, tax collector says

The Madera County Office of the Treasurer-Tax Collector processed more than $66 million in first-installment property tax payments last year, officials have announced.

“The first installment of property taxes has been collected with a total of 94 percent of taxpayers paying timely,” said Treasurer-Tax Collector Tracy Kennedy. “My office, while understaffed, collected, processed and balanced more than $66 million in tax payments.”

That is about $3 million less than last year, because property values in the county have declined, said Assistant Treasurer-Tax Collector Selina April.

“I think the property values have gone down so our amounts have gone down,” she said. “That makes the tax dollars less.” ...
