Madera County soon may have a new contractor to haul its garbage and run its landfill operations.
Caglia Environmental was chosen Tuesday from among three finalist firms that had responded to a county request for proposal for a new contractor. The county has until Saturday to negotiate a contract with Caglia and submit the contract to the state — Cal Recycle — for approval.
The Madera County Board of Supervisors canceled the contract of the present contractor, Madera Disposal Systems, over disagreements about how the landfill was being run, especially the recycling part of the operation. Also, the present contractor’s charge of $53.19 per ton was considerably higher than what surrounding communities were paying. The city of Madera, which had been paying some $37 a ton for garbage disposal, decided to stop using the dump as of the end of this year, which would be a financial blow to both the county and the contractor.
In response to the contract cancellation, Madera Disposal Systems sued, asserting it had a right to a five-year renewal of its contract. That suit is still in court...
