Svanda files, Kidwell to retire

The race for Madera County assessor has been turned on its head due to recent developments that occurred prior to Wednesday, the deadline for filing.

First, Madera City Councilman Gary Svanda filed for the assessor’s job. Second, Assessor Tom Kidwell, who has held the job 19 years, announced a decision Thursday to retire on Dec. 31, the last day of his term.

Finally, Kidwell also announced his endorsement of Svanda, praising Svanda’s accomplishments as “a proven leader and manager with mature vision who would work diligently to fairly represent people of Madera County as their assessor.”

Svanda, whose resume includes three four-year terms on the council and two stints during that time as mayor, says his qualifications for the assessor’s job include “extensive experience managing professionals from my many years as a business owner.” ...
