Corrections website is restricted

The Madera County Department of Corrections has shut down a feature on its website which allowed the public to access information about people with jail records.

In response to complaints from people with prior arrest records, the search feature has temporarily been disabled.

That county website, www.madera-county.com/ corrections/, allows anyone with an Internet connection to search all local jail-booking records by a person’s first and last names, and also lists the criminal charges and provides booking mugshots.

Lt. Gerald King of Madera County Corrections said the website still provides information on people currently in custody, but does not now provide past arrest records. King said there was a fine line between the public’s right to know and an individual’s right to privacy, and the decision to block the “check archives” feature on the Madera County Jail website was presently under review, he said...

If someone is arrested by a paid public officer, placed in a paid public vehice, transported to a paid public custody setting and processed through paid public judicial system, then sentenced to a paid public facility or placed on paid public probation, the public paying the bills has a right to know who the denfendent is! Period!
